Located at the Firth of Clyde’s mouth Arran (Isle of) is frequently referred to as “Scotland in miniature”. Similar to the country of Scotland Arran has varied scenery and a diverse range of flora and fauna, the island features sandy beaches, lochs, moors, glens, rocky coves and even has a highlands and lowlands region. To complete the likeness the island of Arran also has standing stone circles, castles, a distillery, a brewery, museums and high-quality local produce and crafts. Arran is an exceptional destination for a vacation, especially for tourist who enjoy rambling or similar. In the article below I write about Arran tourist attractions and a brief examination of Isle of Arran hotel accommodation.
Brodick Castle
Brodick Castle is an commanding red sandstone structure which at one time was the property of the dukes of Hamilton. Found some distance from the port of Brodick, enclosed by beautiful gardens and parks the castle was constructed upon the site of an old Viking fortress. Visiting the castle is a great day out suitable for families kids will enjoy the adventure playground while older family members will be pleased by the castle’s impressive collection of fine art, silver and porcelain. Expect to spend at least 2 hours exploring the castle.
Arran Heritage Museum
Arran Heritage Museum is found, on the site of a school, in Brodick and opens April-Oct from half past ten in the morning to half past four in the afternoon. Consisting of a collection buildings; a croft (small farmstead), cottage, smiddy and farmhouse as well as stable, laundry, milk house, coach house and harness room and more. Exhibits reflect the archaeology, social history and geology of Arran.
Isle of Arran Distillery
Wherever you are situated in Scotland it appears as though are never far from something to do with the whisky industry such as a whisky distillery. The Isle of Arran Distillery employs traditional techniques in the newest working distillery in the country. The distillery is open to the public from April-Oct and it has a visitor centre and restaurant.
Isle of Arran Brewery
The Isle of Arran Brewery is located at the entrance to Brodick Country Park. Folk can watch the process of brewing via viewing gallery and observation windows as well as having the opportunity to taste the produce. The micro-brewery utilises high-tech equipment to brew an ale using natural ingredients without artificial preservatives and other additives.
Lochranza Castle
The last Isle of Arran tourist attraction I want to discuss is Lochranza Castle on the North coast. On first look all you see is ruins sixteenth century tower house but it is possible to get inside using keys from the Post Office/local shop. Once inside the L-plan tower you start to see evidence of a grand structure.
Accommodation On The Isle of Arran
Finding the best Arran accommodation should not be much of a problem as hotels on Arran can be found in most of the largest villages (Lamlash, Blackwaterfoot and Brodick all have the minimum of one hotel as well as guest houses). Establishments to look out for include the Glenisle Hotel and the Lamlash Bay Hotel (in Lamlash), the Auchrannie Spa Resort (in Brodrick,) and the Best Western Kinloch Hotel (in Blackwaterfoot) all of which have an excellent reputation.
